Regulatory Analysis and Impact Assessments

For over four decades, PNNL has worked with federal agencies to conduct environmental reviews to produce scientifically credible, legally defensible, and consistently useful NEPA documents for public and government decision-makers. EA&E staff couple proven project management capabilities with multi-disciplined environmental and engineering expertise to complete the most scientifically challenging and legally demanding regulatory documents required by our federal and private sponsors.

Energy Systems Siting, Licensing and Safety Reviews, and Permitting

Energy Systems Siting, Licensing and Safety Reviews, and Permitting

Predicated on decades of reliable collaboration with NRC, DOE, DoD, and others, the EA&E team has developed and implemented the environmental teams and infrastructure required to produce regulatory reviews and guidance in support of siting and licensing nuclear, conventional fossil, and renewable energy facilities. Having completed more than 40 environmental impact statements and environmental assessments for the NRC alone, EA&E teams are committed to maintaining readily deployable scientific and engineering capabilities critical to performing complex and integrated environmental and safety assessments to meet our nation's energy production and transmission needs.

Regulatory Compliance and Assurance

Regulatory Compliance and Assurance

With recognized expertise in managing and supporting regulatory and compliance activities for federal, state, and local sponsors, PNNL seeks to produce NEPA documents that enable agencies to make better, more informed decisions. Employing interdisciplinary teams, PNNL provides strategic project planning and scoping, coordination and compliance with environmental laws and regulations, and synthesis of complex ecologic and human-health-related assessment findings. Our teams work interactively with sponsors to rigorously analyze tradeoffs between and among environmental impacts, costs, public risk, and stakeholder values.

Probabilistic Risk and Impact Assessment

Utilizing fundamental capabilities in multi-scale hydro-meteorologic and geoseismic modeling within probabilistic frameworks, EA&E staff provides trade-off, safety, and environmental analyses of integrated water and energy systems including water resource forecasting and utilization; adaptive resource management and uncertainty analyses; evaluations of extreme hazards such as weather, flooding, and seismic events; and effects of environmental conditions on emergency actions in operational, site-specific, and systems-level assessments.
