These laboratories are managed by staff in the EA&E Group and are focused on characterization, assessment, and determining the impacts of radiological and non-radiological contaminants on human and ecological health, natural systems, and resources. Primary research areas supported by these laboratories include ecosystem health assessments and radioecology; growth studies and bio-accumulation analyses; molecular biology, ecology, and biomarker identification; and includes specialized laboratory procedures and processes.

These laboratories are utilized by matrixed staff throughout PNNL, with an emphasis on applied environmental microbiology and geochemistry; fate and transport of metals, organics, and radionuclide contaminants; and remediation technologies, processes, and strategies. Facilities also support EA&E staff conducting research related to the development, evaluation, and application of rapid and efficient enzyme-based molecular detection systems providing sponsors cost effective mechanisms and approaches to assess the efficacy of monitored natural attenuation and enhanced bioremediation strategies.

Designed and operated to address engineering based solutions for our national security sponsors, our unique capabilities enable the at-scale verification and validation of current and next-generation interdiction systems across multiple configurations and conditions.

Integrated into the Systems Integration and Testing Facility (3440), EA&E teams are engaged in activities evaluating radiation detection and threat reduction equipment including investigative and supplemental testing of commercial off-the-shelf technologies, as well as novel configurations. Complemented by a fully programmable environmental chamber, the facility enables scenario based testing of engineered systems across a broad range of atmospheric extremes providing condition specific improvements to both system operations and performance.

Similarly, our one-of-a-kind full scale Rail Test Facility simulates in-field conditions for radiation detection systems used in domestic applications enabling engineers and researchers to evaluate configurations, technical maturity, pre-deployment, and operational testing.
